A team representing the Chantilly Youth Association traveled to Cal Ripken Baseball Complex in Aberdeen Maryland over the Labor Day weekend and captured first place in the 3-day tournament. The 15-team tourament featured strong teams from all over the mid-Atlantic from as far north as Rhode Island.
The boys swept through pool play on Saturday and Sunday finishing 4 – 0 behind strong pitching performances by Shane Butler, and Conner Jones. Their fourth victory was a come from behind effort with big hits from Joe Miller, Mike Eshleman and a game winning double from Brady Ryan.
Seeded first in the semi-finals, the Chargers earned the right to play on “Cal Senior’s” field, a beautiful diamond in the likeness of Baltimore’s Camden Yards, compete with pro-style dugouts and stadium seating. The Chargers effort in the semi-final was a complete 11- 1 victory, with 5 innings of strong pitching from David Tammaro, great defense from Jared Enders and a shut-down closing performance from Brett Norwood.
The championship final was a tremendous game with the visiting Virginia Bruins taking 2-0 and 4-2 leads. Each time the Chargers battled back with key hits and shut down the Bruins with customary strong team defense. Game MVP Cole Wykoff was amazing behind the plate and contributed big hits in key situations. Conner Bigelow kept the Bruins off balance the entire game, and earned a complete game victory. The game ended on a beautiful play by Jared DiCesare on a hot smash to deep third with first baseman John Imperial stretching and scooping the ball to record final out and seal the 8-4 victory and championship.
Congratulations to the 11-U Chantilly Chargers and their coaches Steve Norwood, Joe DiCesare and John Enders!!
