Sports in Brief: Southern Fairfax (July 16-23)

McMahon tosses no-hitter:

Richie McMahon, a rising senior pitcher for the West Springfield varsity baseball team, tossed a nine-inning no-hitter for the ODL Dominion Dragons of the Northern Virginia Travel Baseball League on July 12. McMahon's nine-inning gem led the Dragons to a 6-0 win over the Vienna Mustangs at Hayfield Secondary School.

100-plus divers compete in Wally Martin Championship:

Last Sunday, 109 divers from across the region competed in the Northern Virginia Diving League's 41st Annual Wally Martin 3-Meter Championship. The divers represented 31 of the Northern Virginia Swimming League's 47 pools across Fairfax and Arlington counties, as well as throughout the cities of Falls Church and Alexandria.

The only 3-meter competition of the NVSL season, the Wally Martin Championship has a rich tradition of encouraging divers to test their skills from the high dive. The meet is named after Wally Martin, a former dive coach at Tuckahoe in McLean. Martin first brought diving to the NVSL, which included only swimming at its inception in 1955. But in 1961, Martin's dream became reality.

Divers ages 8 to 18 competed in four different age groups, each of which completed between three and six dives apiece.

In the senior division, which included boys and girls ages 15-18, Kim Pilka (Great Falls) finished first with 219.30 points, while Trevor Michalak (Ilda Community, Annandale) took home the boys' title with 238.95.

In the intermediate division (ages 13-14), Maggie Cullather of Camelot Community Club in Annandale finished first with 170.67 points. Nathan Michalak (Ilda Community, Annandale) finished first for the boys with 138.65.

In the junior division (ages 11-12), Alex Daloane of Annandale's Truro Homes Association was victorious with 102.09 points, and Allison Stickel of Vienna Woods won the girls' title with 135.12.

In the freshman (10-and-under) division, Fairfax Station's Teal Schuppin grabbed the title with 70.62 points, while Lee Graham's Tucker Smith (Falls Church) was victorious in his own pool with 93.18.

Tryouts and announcements:

The Fauquier Mustangs U-11 travel baseball team is looking for players to round out its roster for the fall 2008 and spring 2009 seasons. The Mustangs participate in a local travel league and various regional tournaments. Players born on or after May 1, 1997, are eligible. There are no fees to join. For information or to schedule a tryout, call Gary Croson at 540-336-5771.

Northern Virginia Senior Softball seeks men (50-plus) and women (40-plus) to play Fall Ball – two seven-inning slowpitch games every Tuesday and Thursday on various Fairfax County fields Sept. 2-Oct. 30. NVSS has 25 teams organized into three skill-level conferences. Players are assigned to a team by a skill assessment, not a tryout. For information, call Dave at 703-524-5576 or Ted at 703-913-0028, or visit www.nvss.org.

The Washington Bayhawks professional lacrosse team will host two camps this summer at George Mason University.
